Flexible working

If a staff member requests flexible working patterns, you need to know what they can request and what you must do in response. Our employment solicitors will advise you on your flexible working procedures and how to manage requests.

Employees that have at least 26 weeks’ continuous service may make a flexible working request under the statutory procedures. There are certain requirements, and you can turn down requests for permitted reasons. We can guide you on the correct process, how to respond and how to manage employee expectations.

Employees might of course make an informal request at any time. Regardless of the type of request, employees could allege discrimination if you fail to handle the matter in an appropriate way. It is therefore important that you follow a defined process and be able to justify your grounds for any refusal.
